Ways we can help

The Hand Protection Assessment Survey from Polyco – safeguarding your employees and your business

The vast range of hand and arm protection products available on the market today can make choosing gloves or gauntlets suitable for your workplace very difficult. But it’s crucial to get it right, because selecting the most appropriate hand protection will help safeguard your employees from harm and support your organisation’s health and safety objectives.

To assist our customers in this important activity Polyco offers a free audit service to organisations with 50, or more glove users. Performed by glove-industry experts, the Polyco Hand Protection Assessment Survey will:

  • Provide a detailed report, highlighting the most appropriate hand and arm protection options for your workplace;
  • Document a process to support your risk assessment procedures;
  • Identify any areas where cost savings can be achieved and procedures improved;
  • Help ensure your organisation complies with current EN standards and legislation, particularly European Directive 89/656/EEC on The Use of Personal Protective Equipment; and
  • Advise on how to avoid injury claims and lost time due to employee ill health.

The survey is conducted with no obligation to buy. Suggested products are available to try, however, as a workplace trial can be a good way to establish employee support. It will enable you to involve workers directly in an initiative that will directly affect them, and can help overcome any pre-formed objections they might have to using gloves.

If you do choose to run a trial of suggested products, a subsequent user survey can be carried out to establish workers’ feedback, which can then inform your final purchasing decision.

‘Assessing hand protection’ – a course to help you do the job better

Polyco’s ‘Assessing Hand Protection’ course is the first on the subject to be accredited by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). The one-day course is designed to give health and safety professionals and other duty-holders involved in selecting the most appropriate hand protection the knowledge they need to navigate this often complicated process and avoid potential costly mistakes.

Delivered by health and safety expert and former IOSH president Gerard Hand, alongside Polyco’s technology director, Bernard Garvey, the highly interactive course comprises nine sessions. The sessions alternate between theory and practical group exercises, covering the basic principles and processes involved in evaluating and selecting the right hand protection for a variety of tasks.

Specific topics addressed during the day include:

  • Legislation (PPE Directive, EN standards)
  • CE marking
  • Types of hand protection
  • Materials used – pros and cons
  • Manufacturing methods
  • Hand protection policies

The course is held at Polyco’s headquarters in Enfield, Middlesex and trainees will have the opportunity to take a tour of the company’s UKAS-accredited testing facilities.

The day concludes with a final assessment, featuring 10 short, multi-format questions. Successful candidates will receive an IOSH certificate.
